Onions and chopped plum tomatoes are saut\u00e9ed with lots of garlic, a fresh serrano chile, and plenty of warming spices. The spices\u2014cumin seed, turmeric, and a pinch of garam masala\u2014are \"bloomed\" with a combination of oil and heat to intensify and liven their flavors. Then, finely chopped kale is stirred in and cooked until it just begins to wilt. Next, dried yellow split peas and cubed potatoes are simmered in that rich spiced broth until tender. The dish is finished with fresh cilantro. I planned to share two posts last week but realized that I was should-ing myself into doing so. My usual thoughts of\u00a0<em>\"I want to share two posts this week\" <\/em>were replaced by\u00a0\"<em>I should get those two blog posts written this week,\"<\/em> and I've learned that \"should-ing\" myself into doing something\u00a0is a symptom of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blissfulbasil.com\/2016\/11\/04\/overcoming-burnout-letting-go-to-regain-peace-purpose-and-joy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">frantic forcing (as opposed to faithful\u00a0flowing)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, I would have forced my way through\u00a0and gotten those posts up no matter the toll it took on my spirit, energy, inspiration etc., but no one wins in that scenario. You'd be offered two half-hearted posts that left something\u00a0to be desired, and I'd be reinforcing the same old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blissfulbasil.com\/2016\/11\/04\/overcoming-burnout-letting-go-to-regain-peace-purpose-and-joy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">burnout narrative<\/a> that I've been working so\u00a0hard to\u00a0rewrite. Wednesday was spent cooking up a Thanksgiving storm and getting our condo ready for the nearly 20 guests we hosted on Thursday. Friday and Saturday included sleeping in, lots of quality family time, and even some festive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blissfulbasil.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Christmas-Tree-2016-2914.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">holiday decorating<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There was so much relaxation and fun that by the time Sunday rolled around, I was eager to sit down and write this post. It's cooked in a similar style to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianasapplepie.com\/blogs\/indian-as-apple-pie\/8792163-dal-pure-and-simple-comfort-in-a-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dal<\/a>, so most\u00a0of it\u00a0is hands-off simmering.\u00a0\u00a0Onions and chopped plum tomatoes are saut\u00e9ed with lots of garlic, a fresh serrano chile, and plenty of warming spices.
